The Rock

A teacher added some flat rocks to the outside sensory table. Watching a group of children trying to build a fortress at the table was interesting. The walls would not stay up after a little while; a few children left to play in other playground areas. The children who stayed began collaborating when one little boy told the group, “What if we put the big flat rock on the bottom and the little rocks on the top.” So, they started over, and guess what? A wall stayed up then they had a cornerstone and another wall; they were so excited!

As in our spiritual life, we need a cornerstone – Jesus. When we build on a foundation of God’s word and have faith, we will not falter. We will not fail. We will become stronger believers of Jesus Christ.

Watching the children build their fortress made me think of the Sunday school lessons on the wise man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built his house in the sand (Matthew 7:24-27). The house on the sand shifts and falls just as in our life when we are away from God or a lukewarm Christian. We fail. We struggle. We give up.

Life is imperfect. Just like when building a house, sometimes, glitches happen. It’s how you handle it that makes all the difference. If the foundation is solid, the structure on top can be fixed. The builder can go to the problem area and start over with new stronger timber.

Churches and beliefs that are not based on the word of God will not last and will lead people away from God. There is only one God who is the cornerstone of everything because he created everything.

For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. Hebrews 3:4

When a house is built in areas prone to high winds, hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons, they dig down to the earth’s bedrock, anchoring the foundation to the bedrock. The house frame is then anchored to the foundation. A house built with the word of God is unshakeable and strong.

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. Luke 6:48

When we build our life upon the rock, the word of God, we shall prevail, and nothing can stand against us. When the ground feels unstable. We can go to the rock and be saved.

And DAVID spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust; he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so, shall I be saved from mine enemies. 2 Samuel 22:1-4
